Maluaka members and guests were invited to celebrate Chinese New Year on February 7 with the receipt of a traditional invitation in a red envelope. More than 40 people attended the festivities which were held on the Cafe Kiowai Lawn at the Maui Prince Hotel. Guests entered the party via a China entry gate. The lawn was decorated in festive red and gold with colorful hanging lanterns, flowers, and a golden Buddha. The menu included many traditional Chinese dishes including Cantonese Style Roast Duck with Bao Buns and Plum Sauce; Mu Shu Pork and Chicken wrapped in Mandarin Pancakes with Sweet Red Bean Paste; Dim Sum in Steamer Baskets and much more. Guests were entertained by the Acoustico musical trio and by a wonderful Lion Dance accompanied by drums provided by the Au's Shaolin Arts Society. Maluaka member Karen Williams fed lettuce to the lion for good luck.
Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. It is typically celebrated as a time of family reunion and general thanksgiving. Dragon and lion dances are common during Chinese New Year as it is believed that the loud beats of the drum and the deafening sounds of the cymbals together with the frightening faces of the dragon or lion can evict bad or evil spirits. According to ancient Chinese legend, the Nian was a man-eating beast from the mountains which came out every 12 months somewhere close to winter to prey on humans. They believed that the Nian was sensitive to loud noises and the color red, so they scared it away with explosions, fireworks and the liberal use of the color red. These are all part of a traditional Chinese New Year celebration.

The Maluaka sales team has been very busy this month conducting tours of the model apartment at the Wailea sales office as well as touring people on site. The on site scissor lift that was installed in January has proven to be an exceptional sales tool. From the top of the lift, members and prospective members can really visualize the exceptional views they will enjoy from their Maluaka homes. The lift can move about the site to capture views from each building. Several new members were added in the last 60 days. The incredible beauty of Maluaka and the level of service already being enjoyed by members have proven to be a strong attraction for purchasers. The sales team expects this level of activity to continue through the high season.

Construction crews are hard at work at Maluaka to complete the project infrastructure--water lines, sewer lines and building pads. Work is also progressing on the lava rock retaining walls. Maluaka lies adjacent to the ancient path of the King's Trail. To preserve the carefully renovated King's Trail, Maluaka contractors are drilling a tunnel under it and making sure the trail is not disturbed. This 5.5-mile trail is a journey through Maui's history. The trail once encircled the entire island and was reserved for royal use.
