Approximately 70 Maluaka members and guests enjoyed an evening of holiday cheer at the newly refurbished Makena Clubhouse on December 28. The clubhouse looked festive and the weather was glorious. A fabulous buffet offered a delicious selection of seafood and sushi; carved chateaubriand, onaga and rack of lamb; assorted desserts; and a special "kids only" station for the junior set. A magician delighted guests with his slight of hand tricks and musical entertainment was provided by the popular VooDoo Suns.

The land and waters of Maluaka have long been home to some of Maui's most revered residents including colorful reef fish, giant sea turtles, monk seals, axis deer, and a variety of sea and forest birds. Wintering in the tropical splendor of Makena is not a luxury enjoyed only by fortunate humans; every year from December through April or May, thousands of humpback whales visit these shores to bask in the warm waters and delight viewers with their dramatic acrobatics. Your Maluaka home will afford you the perfect venue for enjoying nature's bounty.

More than one-third of Maluaka's 69 residences are currently under contract with several contracts currently pending. Maui is now in the midst of its "high" season of visitor traffic and as part-time residents and visitors arrive, they are hearing about the exciting ownership opportunity at Maluaka. Over the last few weeks, the Maluaka sales team has hosted receptions for area hotel concierge and leading realtors to acquaint them with the exceptional lifestyle offering of Maluaka. The response has been phenomenal.
Anyone who has visited the site can appreciate what a singular opportunity living at Maluaka represents. Now visualizing the incredible scenic panorama that forms the backdrop of your Maluaka home is even easier with our newly installed viewing platform. The viewing platform rises more than 40 feet in the air, allowing viewers to enjoy a spectacular 360-degree view of the surrounding islands, sea and mountains.

Work at Maluaka is continuing on schedule. More than 95% of the grading has been completed and installation of utilities is approximately 30% complete. Foundation work on the club and residences will begin soon.
Minimizing the impact of the development on the surrounding environment has been an effort the development team has tackled with intense dedication. Safeguards have been put in place to preserve artifacts and eliminate storm runoff that could pollute coastal waters. Maluaka will be the first residential community in Hawaii developed under the environmental guidelines of the U. S. Green Building Council.

Maluaka has been very fortunate to have been conceived under the watchful eye of one of Maui's most lauded "kupunas" or elders whose wisdom is highly revered, Leslie Kuloloio. "Uncle" Les has formed the spiritual center of Maluaka. From the earliest days of its conception and planning, he has guided the development team in a greater understanding of the importance of Maluaka's location and stressed the need for ongoing respect of the natural world and the principles of Hawaiian culture.
Born and raised on Maui, "Uncle" Les has become something of an unofficial ambassador for Maui and Hawaii traveling the world to introduce many people to the richness of the native culture. He will continue in his role of storyteller, spiritual adviser and avid fisherman as the on-site cultural adviser for The Club at Maluaka.
"Uncle" Les' lineage can be traced back 500 years. His family name Kuloloi'o translates to "mind of the upright fish". Protection of historical places and cultural practices is something "Uncle" Les has diligently pursued. He's an original member of the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana, dating back to 1976, and his grandfather and grand uncle helped establish place names there. He worked to preserve the King's Trail which runs through Maluaka. He is a member of the Maui-Lanai Islands Burial Council which ensures proper treatment of burial sites found throughout Maui. His wisdom and leadership is sought after on a myriad of issues affecting Maui environmental and cultural preservation.
The word is out and Maluaka members and their guests are enjoying their private golf mornings every Tuesday from 8-11 on one of the Makena Golf courses. Each week, Maluaka Club Day play alternates from the North course to the South course. According to Makena Club Golf Operations Manager, Scott Bridges, more than a dozen or so members have participated in the program on a weekly basis.
"We treat Maluaka members and their guests like royalty from the minute they arrive at the club," said Bridges. "We have special Maluaka golf carts and a nice selection of tee gifts including a sleeve of Titleist PROV1 golf balls for them to spray all over the golf course, a nice divot tool, and each member will soon be receiving a personalized golf towel and a cap on their first round of play. To warm up on the driving range we provide them Titleist PROV1 practice balls and our range attendant is stationed on the tee to tend to any and all of their needs."
Tee times are set up every 16 minutes on Maluaka Club Day so members feel they have the course to themselves. Unlimited food and drinks are available from two beverage carts and from the North course half way house on # 10. Recently refurbished, the half way house is stocked full of all kind of refreshments and each member is presented with his/her own key.
A number of additional upgrades to the clubhouse, course and comfort stations have given the club a freshly polished look. To reserve your tee time, please contact Cathy Cox today at (808) 879-0009.
