Planning a landscape in one of the world's most beautiful natural environments is both an incredible opportunity and an awesome responsibility. This was the task presented to Honolulu-based Miyabara Associates as the landscape architects of Maluaka. The elements of the site that formed the background for Miyabara's design are the azure waters of Makena Bay with its pristine beaches; the emerald fairways of The Makena South Golf Course; swaying palms; red earth; and lichen covered rock walls, ancient fishing shrines and remnants of the famous King's Highway dating from Maui's ancient past. "We have tried to take a very natural approach to the landscaping of Maluaka," explained firm Principal Mike Miyabara. "Most of the plants we are using are native to Hawaii and many are grown right here in Maui."
Miyabara continued, "Because water is such an issue in Maui, we are following LEED® guidelines to ensure that we conserve precious water resources. The planting is more subtle and elegant than hotel or resort landscapes. The golf course provides a lovely, manicured front lawn that terraces down to the beachfront, so we haven't used a lot of additional turf grasses. To frame the views from each of the residences, we have used 20-25 foot high Coconut palms that will mature to 80 feet high. Native plants form a lush green base for the residence buildings and the club with flowering shrubs adding vibrant splashes of color. The hardscape is a combination of native lava rock and stone pavers that complement the plant material," he added.
Miyabara has a 30-year history of creating award-winning landscapes throughout Hawaii. The firm's work includes resort, residential, commercial and public sector projects.
Maluaka owners have come from a number of different geographic areas--Hawaii, Utah, Wisconsin, California, Nevada, Virginia, Texas, Georgia and Japan. All have found the lifestyle offering of Maluaka incomparable. Maluaka's spacious floor plans have been very well received. The three-bedroom/three-and-a-half-bath plans with and without the media room (optional fourth bedroom) have been very popular as have the fabulous penthouse units. Over one-third of Maluaka's 69 residences are currently under contract. But, there are still some wonderful residences left including an incredible bungalow. If any of your family members or friends are interested in ownership at Maluaka, please have them contact a sales representative soon. With the holiday season approaching, we expect the sales pace to be brisk. Check residence availability.
Every day that passes brings Maluaka closer to a reality. Construction crews are busily at work clearing the site of rock and debris and excavation is in progress for the buildings' infrastructure. Foundation work on the club and residences should follow in the coming months. As the site begins to take shape, work is progressing on the club and spa interiors. Hawaii's premier interior design firm, Philpotts Associates, brings its distinctive ability to connect people and their environments to the design of Maluaka's club and spa. Balancing interior and exterior living spaces, eastern and western design influences, textures and colors, Philpotts is creating spaces that are warm, elegant, comfortable and redolent of island living at its best.
"We have selected a palette of warm wood colors, rich ocher, splashes of Chinese reds, soft greens and blues and a mixture of textures and weave for the materials of the club," explained Philpott's Senior Designer Lowell Tom. "The club is such a wonderful space perched on a hill overlooking Makena Bay and the beach that we wanted to encourage the flow from inside to outside both in the dining room and bar and in the exercise room, spa and spa treatment rooms. The design is clean and contemporary, but soft and inviting. It is a mixture of eastern and western sensibility. In keeping with Maluaka's commitment to the environment, we are selecting materials that use natural fibers, limited chemical treatment, are recycled or from renewable resources," he added.
