Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Creates Peak Golf Experience at Maluaka Construction Oct 08

Master architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. is well known for creating incredible golf courses around the world. When he originally designed the Makena North and South courses in 1993, he made every effort to take advantage of the land's spectacular topography and incredible ocean and mountain views.

In developing the current renovation plan for the South Course, Mr. Jones and his team joined with landscape architect, Pinnacle Design Company. With the many advances in golf technology and an ever-increasing interest in environmental sustainability, they were able to identify a wonderful opportunity to improve the overall quality of play while simultaneously enhancing the player's experience of Makena's natural environment.

"Every course we design has a character and a rhythm of play all its own. We've worked in many of the world's most spectacular settings, and Makena has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. The renovated Makena South course will showcase the drama of the natural landscape and enhance the quality of play. I can't think of a better way to spend your days here on Maui, " said Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

"On the Makena South Course we are designing the landscape using native plants to frame the golf holes and open the views to the ocean and the mountains," added Pinnacle Designer Douglas Enroth. "The developer also charged us with meeting both US Green Building Council's LEED® and Audubon International's Cooperative Sanctuary Program guidelines for environmental sustainability and habitat protection. So, we are using a turf grass that is more tolerant to salt water and requires less irrigation and we have added an extensive water retention and recycling system to minimize use of potable water for irrigation."

"We are making the play more flexible to accommodate every level of golfer," explained Bruce Charleton, President/Chief Design Officer. "The holes will be challenging enough to focus your attention on your shots, but when you look up, you can admire the spectacular natural landscape. Since the course will now be private, we are also adding some special features to the fairways that will allow members to determine the most advantageous places to position themselves around the green."

Work on the Makena South Course is currently underway with re-opening planned for 2010.

Construction Progress

The completion of the site work at Maluaka which includes the common elements, the roadways, all of the utilities and landscaping will be finished by the end of this year.

The Clubhouse construction is progressing quickly! The footprint of the building is clearly visible and the structure is changing daily as work on the foundation continues.

If you've been out to the site lately, you may have seen the renovation of the 15th and 16th fairway with its relocated and construction of new tee boxes and creating new sand traps.

Please visit the Maluaka website to see the latest photos of the ongoing construction.

Tiare Lawrence Joins the Maluaka Club Staff as Outdoor Pursuits and Beach Activities Director

We are very happy to welcome Tiare Lawrence to the Maluaka Club staff. Tiare will be working with members to enhance their beach and ocean experiences. Among her duties will be instructing members in the arts of kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding, snorkeling and canoeing. A native of Maui, Tiare started surfing at age 11. She is a frequent participant in surfing, canoeing, and stand up paddle board racing. She is also an accomplished hula dancer. "I hope through my experience I can share my love for the ocean with our members," said Tiare. "The ocean has so much to offer. It is healthy and therapeutic and there are so many wonderful wildlife adventures we can share." Until the Maluaka clubhouse opens, Tiare will be setting up shop at the Beachside Activity Pavilion at the Maui Prince Hotel in December. However, Tiare is available now to provide lessons and clinics on stand up paddle boarding, surfing and kayaking. Please contact Cathy Cox to arrange for your outdoor water adventure with Tiare. Maluaka's own paddle boards, kayaks and canoes are available for members' use.

While we recognize that these are uncertain financial times, we remain confident that as Maui's only private oceanfront golf and beach club, the future of Makena is very bright.

For a limited time, the purchase of a residence will include a golf membership, so please tell your friends who might be interested in this opportunity, or share their information with us and we can send them an invitation to experience Maluaka in Makena.
